The only electronic book reader that can read to you is the Amazon Kindle. It can virtually read any books, newspapers or magazines, and even websites that the Kindle reader has opened. See the section "Text-to-Speech (Asking Kindle to Read to You)" on the official page here for details:

It is a great device for old people too. See here for a review from an elderly people:

I own the Kindle 2 and I love it very much. I remember I read these reviews about the benefits of the Kindle when I decided to buy it:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Finally, in case you don’t know, Amazon has put a price slash on the Kindle 2 just before Christmas, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support… So take the chance if you want it.

    Hope it helps :)

That would be an MP3 player, not an e-book reader. Books on CD are available from libraries in abundance, and loading them onto an MP3 player isn’t too difficult. This is the easiest and best-sounding option.

There are programs that can convert text to speech as well. They all sound very monotonous and it’s hard to understand them without reading aloud, but you know.

Here’s one that comes well-recommended: Ultra Hal Text-to-speech. It can output to WAV files, which most MP3 players can play. As an added bonus if those WAVs are converted before hand to MP3s they will be much smaller…

The Amazon Kindle is the only ebook reader that can read to you. See a review here about this feature of the Kindle:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FRJ6MA1FJ0G0HS%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

I love my Kindle very much. From my experience there are only minority of books that will disable the text-to-speech function, so most of them allow you to read them as audio book.

And you know, there are some websites like these two, where you can find more than ten thousand free books for the Kindle. So no need to go to library to borrow them, you can actually own them:

    The Amazon Kindle can.

I highly recommend you to read this article. It is written by a person who has tried a number of ebook readers. It is also the best review I’ve ever read about ebook readers:
