Try updating the router firmware. You will have to be on the computer hooked directly to the router.

Yes, they may be easily fixed. First thing I would try doing is disconnecting all devices from internet if possible. All you can simply do this by disabling Wi-Fi on wireless devices and disabling internet on other hard wire. Now test your laptop, but remember to restart your laptop then test. If your problem goes away, maybe it was an IP conflict. This is common with devices running old hardware on new OS i.e. "Win 7."

If your problems seems to be the same, then more likely you have a problem with your internet service provider or your router or modem. If your equipment it leased, I would have it swapped and replaced. If you own your equipment, try troubleshooting further.

You can try just using the modem if it is not a combination modem/router. Notice any differences?

By trying these three steps, this should definitely lead you to the right track on finding the source of the problem and maybe it wasn't your laptop. Then again, in the end, you might find out it is.

You can always download drivers for your device, but hardly seems to be the issue, but it shouldn't hurt. Though I have heard of problems with the DNS in some hardware, functioning properly with Win7. So give that a try in the end.

Hope this helps.

Not necessarily. The 3G versions are more expensive, but have a cell phone modem for downloads. The wifi versions do require a wifi connection for the initial setup and downloading of ebooks, but this can be done in a public hot spot. You don't need an active connection to actually read on it, though, just to download content.
