There may be a button or switch on your laptop that has a little wifi icon on it. My sister always forgot to press this button and couldn’t figure out why the wireless wouldn’t show up.
if the wireless was turned off then the option to scan wouldn’t be there. Check you are in range of the router firstly, if it still doesn’t work then get a newer USB adapter for N wireless networks (it’s faster) one like this:

if the laptop very old and no built-in wireless device,
your choice to have wireless is install PC MI/ wireless card
or use WIFI dongle , choose which will be economical for you.
but no guaranty it will also connect fast or flawless.
laptop as you said is old model, most likely you will have trouble using windows OS on that laptop especially if you will install vista or 7,
i suggest you install ubuntu linux on that old laptop and for sure it will run well..
Not a problem. First of all make sure that the card is on and that the green light is indicated on the card (if applicable.) Next, try to restart your computer. It usually resolves the problem on mine if the card didn’t launch correctly. Also, try to find your computer’s model and google it. Find some information about the wifi compatibility. What if it can’t be connected to wifi? Also make sure that the router is on and close by. Try to connect your computer to it with an ethernet cable to see if the internet itself works. If it works, take the cable out and try to look for the signal again. Also, make sure that the signal is public and can be used on another computer. It could be because of your firewall; check the settings. And if you still have a problem, call your local Best Buy and they’ll help you out. Good luck
Its a little unclear what your asking here?
Im presuming your using windows xp or similar.
if your laptop has a wireless icon in the bottom right. it must already have a wireless card.
Check there isnt a "Fn" gey or switch to turn the antennae on as some older laptops literally turned the antennae off without turning the card itself off.
if the card refuses to get a signal and other laptops are ok, try updating the drivers for the card.
If the wireless icon you have in the corner is a branded one as opposed to the built in windows one there should be an option to turn it off and use the windows one.
If the laptop is windows XP make sure it is at least service pack 2 (right click my computer and properties to find out) (wireless support got a lot better in SP 2)
if you are using the windows one try this,
go to run (windows key + r) type services.msc, you will get a window with a big list of things with cog icons, search for the wireless service and stop, then restart it, its called "wireless zero config" in xp and somthing like "wlan autoconfig" in vista and above.
if still no joy try going in to your routers settings and change the wireless channel to somthing else its a number between 1-13.
If your asking how to make a laptop wireless that isnt you need a wireless card.
USB wireless dongle, most commonly supported but sticks out a lot,
PCMCIA wireless card (the big credit card sized slot if you have one) older and only on laptops but sticks out less so less likley to get damaged.
internal card. best not to go down this route if you dont know what your after, but if you want to try replacing the one in there as it might be broken try putting your laptop model in to e-may to find a cheap spare one.
to comment on some of the answers above, I do not recommend linux to you unless you are very experienced with computers and like a challenge, most things wont just work by default like with windows, also wireless N (as opposed to g) is faster etc if you have a compatable router but chances are if you’ve had your router for more than a year or so it wont support N. an N card will work but no faster than G so its ok to cheap out on that point ^_^
