Unfortunately, you cannot put the books you originally own onto the Kindle. Paperback books and Kindle books are sold separately.
The good thing is that Kindle books are much cheaper than actual books. Since you will buy more and more books in the future, it saves both money and space to buy books in Kindle version. I’ve bought over 30 books and I think the money it saved me on buying books already cover half of the price of the Kindle.
And it is good for you that Amazon just announced a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is $60 cheaper than the price I bought mine. So take the chance.
I’ve given more opinions and how to make best use out of the Kindle in a previous answer here:

No, you cannot put actual books to an electronic reader.
However, you can put electronic books that you originally own or newly bought onto the Kindle. See here for the official page of how to put files to the Kindle and what file formats are supported:

If you are an avid reader, I’ll say get it and you won’t regret. Kindle books are much cheaper than actual books so it will help you save quite a lot of money. I suggest you to read this simple review too:

Hope this helps you decide.
