I say the Kindle.
I love my Kindle 2 very much. If you’re thinking about getting the Kindle, I’ll say get it and you won’t regret. Right now I’ve read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, it is really clear like reading books; and even I read with the device for long hours, I don’t feel tired. The internet browsing comes handy as well when I want to look for information on some specific area. My only complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are in white color… I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle
Yes, Kindle books are cheaper than hard copies. I suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR9J54TZ1541OR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957
And there are some websites, where you can find more than a million of free books for the Kindle, so that’s why you no longer need to get to library, you can actually own these books:

If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX. Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:

Hope this helps.
Don’t get one at all. They are pointless because they have a black and white screen. I would recommend one of the new ipads but if you are looking to go cheaper then I guess go with one of the electronic book readers….Kindle that is.
I own the Kindle. If you ask me to choose again now, I’ll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook or Sony Reader, because it has the text-to-speech function which means I can "read" books with my hands and eyes free to do other things. I use this function often when I’m on public transport, doing housework, etc. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.
The web browsing function over wireless network on the Kindle (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot; the Sony Reader doesn’t even have a web browser) is rather important as well. The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I’m in need. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.
And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and ebooks are cheaper on the Kindle as well (Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle. For Sony, many users complain it is difficult to find books for it).
And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:

Finally, there may be good offers for the ebook readers from Amazon’s site. I put the links below for you to check from time to time.
Hope it helps

I’ve given my opinion on best e-book reader among these three, in a previous answer here. Guess it’ll help you decide which one to go for:

kindle is the best
Kindle is sure a worth buying. Wireless is a unique feature I will say and that’s make really value for money. 3G wireless and global coverage, I personally travel a lot and really worthy for me. You can have any newspaper at any place and also they are cheaper. The best selling value for the Kindle is convenience for the travel, it’s pretty handy and easy to carry anywhere with you. The other important thing matters to me are speedy for downloading books and reading material. Also it allow around average size of 1500 books and reading material to store, so is a significant amount of storage space to bring with you. In one line I can say “you are carrying your book shelf with you”.
Also one of the other feature of Kindle is it’s E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and you can read for hours.
Also you save a lot in compare to the actual books, the books on kindle are really cheaper so I have saved a lot till now. Also there are plenty of books on kindle to choose. Also it has so good features such as Text-To-Speech which is really useful when you get bored or doing some other activity.

Among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I’ll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:

Apple iPad

MEMORY: The memory for the iPad is 16-64 GB. Amazon Kindle boasts 2 GB and the Nook has 2 GB of memory, but is expandalbe. The Kindle DX has 4 GB of memory.
SCREEN: The iPad has a touchscreen LCD. The other readers use eInk, which some argue is easier on the eyes.
COLOR: The iPad is the only eReader with color. The Kindle and Nook has 16 shades of gray.
INTERNET CONNECTIONS: The iPad uses WiFi and 3G connections. The 3G connection is $14.99 to $30 per month. The Amazon Kindle and Kindle DX use free 3G connections for downloads and the Barnes & Noble Nook uses both 3G and WiFi – a definite plus if you are somewhere with a WiFi connection and no 3G network available.
SUPPORTED eBOOK FORMATS: The iPad allows users to read Kindle books via a Kindle App, PDF files, ePub. The Kindle reads Kindle, PDF, MOBI, and the Nook can read eReader, ePub, PDF, and PDB formats. More formats may become available as the companies compete for the eReader market.
APPS and GAMES: Only the iPad boasts Apps and Games – the rest are just ways to read your favorite book.
PRICE: The iPad is $499-$829; The Kindle and Nook are $259 and the Kindle DX is $489
Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money. You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there’s no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.
